Human remains found in Baldwin County

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Human remains found in Milledgeville are scheduled to be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab Monday.  Baldwin County Deputy Coroner Ken Garland told 41NBC he will take the skull and assorted small bones to determine the identity of the human remains.

According to Garland, a hunter discovered the skull and bones in a wooded area in the 2600 block of North Columbia Street in Milledgeville on Friday around 4 p.m.  Garland said the bones have been in the area for a matter of years.  “There was no [decomposed] tissue, just bones, and it takes a considerable amount of time for that to happen, at least years,” he explained.

Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the human remains case. The sheriff’s office is looking into cold cases of missing person reports.

“The sheriff’s office has an idea who the remains belonged to,” added Garland. “But they will have to go through GBI forensic anthropology in order to determine who it was with accuracy.”

The coroner will be taking the human remains to the GBI crime lab in Atlanta. “They will be compared with dental records or either DNA to determine the identity,” he continued.
