How to protect yourself from becoming a victim of housing scams

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia is warning home buyers to beware of real estate scams.

More than 600,000 people are victims of scams in Middle Georgia. Kelvin Collins of the Better Business Bureau of Central Georgia says the Bibb and Houston County housing scams are among many in the state.

“Greed does rule a lot of folks and in this situation it looks like some folks just got greedy and found a way to separate consumer’s from their money,” said Collins.

Collins advises there are some signs you can look for such as how a buyer will communicate with you.

“If the person that you’re dealing with does not want to meet you in person that’s a red flag,” added Collins.

He also has some suggestions for house hunters.

“If you’re looking for a real estate agent check around and ask family and friends check with the Better Business Bureau, contact the board of realtors,” he continued.

Collins recommends checking with your tax assessors’ office to find out who owns the property you want to purchase.
