The Houston County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about phone scams involving callers who claim people have outstanding warrants or unpaid fines.

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Houston County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about phone scams involving callers who claim people have outstanding warrants or unpaid fines.

According to the sheriff’s office, scammers may contact residents claiming they have warrants for missing jury duty, failing to pay traffic citations or other offenses.

The sheriff’s office says it will never contact residents by phone to notify them of warrants for those offenses.

Deputies also warn that the sheriff’s office will never ask residents to pay fines or fees over the telephone, in person or through a cryptocurrency kiosk as part of these calls.

Officials say scammers can be persistent and demanding, but they are not affiliated with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents who receive suspicious calls are urged to hang up immediately and avoid providing financial information.
