Houston County School’s AP Program Receives $2.9 Million Grant

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Houston County Schools are receiving millions of dollars to expand math and science programs.

The district has partnered with Robins Air Force Base to expand the National Math and Science Initiative’s Advanced Placement (NMSI) program.

The program will now be implemented in more high schools and middle schools in Houston County.

At a news conference Thursday, Houston County Superintendent, Dr. Robin Hines, led the ceremony and showed appreciation to the base and to NMSI for the grant that’s almost $2.9 million that was dedicated to the school district from the Department of Defense Education Activity.

The grant will benefit AP students at all five high schools and provide more students with rigorous coursework that will help them succeed in science, technology, math and engineering.

One AP student, Abby Butikofer, is excited about what the grant will mean for her future.

“I think this is a really great opportunity that’s so much money that we can use, just for student success and I love that it’s just given towards us, and it’s all for the betterment of Houston County and our students and it’s gonna be really great for our future,” Butikofer said.

The grant will fund the program for the next three years.

School and base officials say the grant will help grow the next generation of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians.
