Houston County School Board Tables Vote on Bus Cameras
PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Houston County Board of Education tabled the vote to install cameras on school buses.
The board voted to postpone the decision on the installation of 20 cameras on school bus crossing arms.
American Traffic Solutions would handle most of the installation. The cameras would be used to catch violators passing the buses while children are loading and unloading.
Houston County Superintendent Dr. Robin Hines says this project is not at a complete stop. Board members want additional time to work with local governments and ATS before making a final decision.
“It’s just a matter of cleaning up details and making sure we are where we need to be structurally before we move forward,” Hines said.
Houston County Transportation Director Frank Scott is confident board members are heading in the right direction.
“I think it will be passed in September,” Scott said. “I think all the bugs will be worked out and I think we will get support of the board.”
Houston County schools currently have 181 buses on the road. Scott says they see about 61 bus violations a day.
“Vehicles failing to stop, that is a very dangerous situation for everyone,” Scott said.
If anyone knows how the danger of crossing the road, it’s Kim Hale. Hale’s been driving buses for 15 years. She says the road rage isn’t getting better.
“They’ve really gotten aggressive more in the past couple of years,” Hale says, “they threaten to pass you all the time.”
