Houston County leaders talk state of the community

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Leaders in Houston County say the state of the community is growing.

Dozens of business and county leaders attended the annual luncheon on Wednesday.

Each swing set, each jungle gym, each field at Rozar Park is worth so much to the city of Perry.

“It’s critical to attract the people that we want to have in Perry of all ages, the young and the old,” Perry Mayor Jimmy Faircloth said.

The long time mayor along with a handful of other city and county leaders shared the progress of their respective organizations and where they’d like to see them go.

“We try to ask them questions where they can tell us what they think the community doesn’t know about,” Joe Brownlee, the chair of the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce, said.

Representatives from Robins Air Force Base, the Houston County School District, and the development authority spoke about the state of the county and new developments.

Perry’s mayor Jimmy Faircloth says one of things he’d like to see more of in the city is green space. He’d like to connect all the parks throughout the city with a walking trail.

“That’s one thing that we don’t have enough of,” said Faircloth.

Every year business leaders ask about the next phase of the county.

“They hear the things that are important to different organizations and the business community through these questions gets to tell them what’s important to us. It’s a glove and hand kind of operation,” Brownlee said.

Faircloth says if the city and the county’s endeavors are successful, then it’s a win-win for everyone and he’d like to continue the trend.

“When you have something like this it gives the elected officials an opportunity to showcase that are going on in each of respective areas that are positive and that are  going to eventually grow the community in our own way,” Faircloth said.

He says there isn’t a timeline yet, but he and the city are working on a plan to develop the connecting walking trail.

He thinks that will attract more people to the city.
