Houston County BOE Approves to Continue SPLOST

The Houston County Board of Education approved a resolution to continue an education SPLOST.

If the SPLOST is passed, funds will be used to update technology across the school system, provide facility upgrades, and purchase additional school sites.

Mossy Creek Middle School Principal Paige Busbee says, “We would be looking to outfit every classroom in our building with a smart board, with the technology to take our kids to the 21st century to allow them access to web learning and different modes of software we have not been able to utilize before.”

Without the continuation of a penny sales tax, those upgrades won’t happen.

“The SPLOST is a consumer tax when people go and buy they pay the extra penny tax. It’s not just the Houston County people, it’s people that visit our county and spend their money here,” says Houston County Superintendent Dr. James Hines.

Hines also says, “We want all of our buildings up to the standard so that our children our comfortable in a learning environment that will best meet their needs.”

Houston County voters will have the option to vote for the continuation of the penny sales tax on November 8th.

The current SPLOST will end March 2012.
