Houston Co. Elected Officials Talk Jobs and Crime Over Breakfast

Houston County residents and leaders started·Thursday morning together over breakfast at the Robins Regional Chamber of Commerce “Eggs & Issues Breakfast.”

The event was a chance for residents to have an informal meeting with County Commissioners and Sheriff Cullen Talton. Commission Chairman, Tommy Stalnaker, said the county has nearly completed all the projects the 2001 and 2006 SPLOSTs were expected to fund.

He said,”Everything that we have promised the voters when these SPLOSTs were passed has been done or will be done. There’s no fear of the government retracting what they promised the people.”

The panel was joined by a Congressman Austin Scott. Scott made a surprise visit to the breakfast to give the community an update of what is taking place on the federal level.

According to Stalnaker, the county will start to aggressively look to bring more industry to the area. He says he will introduce a community wide proposal this summer to help with that effort.

Sheriff Cullen Talton was a part of the 9 person panel, and said he believes serious offenders should be held more accountable.

Talton said, “We’ve had people get out on child molestation charges. We’ve had people get out on rape charges. It’s real discouraging to my people to see them get out on bond.”

The “Eggs & Issues Breakfast,” was sponsored by the Geotechnical & Environmental Consultants.
