Hooked on Science: Walking Water

(41NBC/WMGT) — You’ve heard about walking on water but have you ever heard of walking water? Science Guy Jason Lindsey shows us this week how to see “walking” water.

You’ll need three clear cups, two paper towels and food coloring. In one cup on either the left or right side add yellow food coloring and in the opposite cup add blue food coloring, do not add any to the middle cup. Take the two paper towels and put them in the cups in such a way as to connect the two outer cups to the middle cup and watch what happens.

Water from the yellow and blue cups will travel through the paper towels and into the middle cup to create green! This happens due to something called capillary action which is the movement of water. You can also try other colors in the opposite cups to see what colors mix in the middle cup!
