Hooked on Science: Baffling Balloon Pop

(41NBC/WMGT) — Science Guy Jason Lindsey shows us this week how to make a balloon pop with the power of the sun!

Using a black balloon already placed inside of a clear balloon, Lindsey inflates the clear balloon up until the black balloon is floating inside of the clear one freely. He then takes a magnifying glass and focuses a beam of sunlight onto the black balloon and the black balloon pops leaving the clear balloon to remain inflated.

The black balloon popped because the darker color took in a large amount of energy from the sun beam and it weakened the rubber of the balloon causing it to pop! This is why you want to wear lighter colors when it’s a very hot day.
