Hollywood Minute: The Weeknd’s film debut falls flat

(CNN)- It was a rough weekend at the box office for music superstar Abel Tesfaye—better known to fans as “The Weeknd.” His movie debut, The Idol-inspired drama The Hurry Up Tomorrow, opened to disappointing numbers, earning just $3.3 million in estimated ticket sales and failing to break into the top five.

Adding to the struggle, the film has garnered a dismal 13% “freshness rating” on RottenTomatoes.com, reflecting largely negative reviews from critics.

Meanwhile, fans of the Gears of War video game franchise have something to look forward to. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Fall Guy director David Leitch is in talks to direct and produce Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of the hit Xbox series. The project marks a major step in bringing the sci-fi action saga to the screen.

On the indie film front, actress Anna Campbell takes center stage—both in front of and behind the camera. She stars in Nora, a heartfelt drama about a woman torn between rekindling her music career and raising her six-year-old daughter as a single parent.

Campbell also wrote and directed the film, which is set to premiere on the Veep streaming platform this Saturday, May 24.
