Hollywood Minute: Oscar voting rules tighten, new category announced
Academy members must watch all nominated films in a category to vote in that category.

(CNN)- It may seem like common sense, but now it’s official: Academy members must watch all nominated films in a category to vote in that category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the change this week, turning what was previously a strong suggestion into a formal requirement. The move aims to ensure fairer and more informed voting as the film industry continues to evolve. Alongside the rule update, the Academy unveiled guidelines for its newest award—Achievement in Casting. The category will make its debut at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, recognizing the often-overlooked work of casting directors in shaping a film’s success.
In horror news, the first teaser trailer for Weapons, the latest film from Barbarian writer-director Zach Cregger, has just dropped. The chilling preview hints at a mysterious overnight disappearance of children and a growing sense of dread. Weapons is set to hit theaters on August 8.
On the lighter side, ballet takes center stage in Étoile, a new comedy series from the executive producers of Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
