Holiday travel hits record as 122.4 million Americans head out in 2025

(CNN)- The year 2025 is ending on a historic travel note, with AAA estimating a record-setting 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home during the holiday period.

AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz says the extended two-week travel window is contributing to the surge, as travelers head out at different times and on different days. Of those traveling, nearly 110 million are expected to drive, just over eight million will fly, and close to five million will use other forms of transportation such as buses or trains.

For drivers, AAA recommends leaving as early as possible to avoid congestion. Diaz says early morning hours typically see lighter traffic, fewer crashes, and less construction-related delays compared to later in the day.

Air travelers are also being urged to plan ahead. Melanie Fish, vice president of global public relations for Expedia, says travelers can save time and reduce stress by handling key steps before arriving at the airport, including reserving parking, checking in early, and pre-paying for checked baggage.

As for those still searching for last-minute airfare deals, Fish cautions that while lower prices may be available, they often come with trade-offs. She notes some discounted flights may include significantly longer layovers or extended travel times that may not be worth the savings.

With millions on the move, travel experts say planning ahead and allowing extra time will be key to navigating what is shaping up to be one of the busiest holiday travel seasons on record.
