Historic Macon Foundation celebrates 50th anniversary of Fall Flea Market

Public shopping is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 3, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 4.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Historic Macon Foundation is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its Fall Flea Market, its largest annual fundraiser supporting historic preservation and community revitalization efforts.

The anniversary event begins Friday, October 2, with ticketed shopping at 357 Oglethorpe St. in downtown Macon. Free public shopping will follow Saturday and Sunday.

“The Flea Market has been a beloved community tradition for 50 years thanks to our dedicated Flea Market volunteers,” said Emily Hopkins, executive director of Historic Macon Foundation. “This is our largest fundraiser and it has become the go-to place for community members to donate their unneeded treasures so that they can find second-life and a good home for the next generation.”

Historic Macon Foundation works to revitalize communities by preserving architecture and sharing local history. Hopkins said the organization focuses much of its work on improving neighborhoods through the rehabilitation of historic homes and new construction.

“We have worked actively to preserve them, but we really focus on neighborhood work and work in specific neighborhoods to work house by house, street by street, and block by block to rehab historic homes and build new construction to bring about neighborhood change in a really positive way,” Hopkins said.

The Fall Flea Market is powered by more than 50 volunteers who work throughout the year to prepare for the event. Shoppers can find thousands of donated items, including antique furniture, home décor, artwork, vintage linens, kitchenware, garden tools and collectibles.

Friday’s festivities begin with VIP champagne shopping from 5 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $100. The general Preview Party follows, with discounted tickets available to Historic Macon Foundation members.

Public shopping is free from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 3, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, October 4. Historic Macon Foundation members receive 15% off regularly priced purchases throughout the weekend.

According to Historic Macon Foundation, 83 cents of every dollar spent at the flea market directly supports its mission.

Founded in 1964, Historic Macon Foundation has worked for more than 60 years to preserve architecture and revitalize communities throughout Macon.
