High speed chasing and hydro-planing lessons for police recruits
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Imagine chasing a suspect behind the wheel, at 100 mph or through extreme weather conditions.
Some new recruits and officers are developing their driving skills to take down suspects during high speed chases.
Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) is located in Forsyth.
GPSTC’s academy recruits joined other recruits from Albany Police Department and Gwinnett County Police Department in learning how to pursue suspects.
GPSTC’s Emergency Vehicle Operational Course (EVOC) is more than a mile long and is equipped to simulate a slick surface, to help drivers learn how to prevent hydro-planing on wet roads.
Recruits also learned how to drive during a high speed chase.
The center’s driving manager, Penny Hodges says officers need to know how to maneuver their cars in any type of weather.
“Whether it could be in an area that has water ponding on the roadway, so we try to prepare all of our law enforcement students out here to be prepared for any road surface,” says Hodges.
The GPSTC academy recruits will be tested of their driving skills Friday.
Training instructors will be gauging their driving techniques and performance on the EVOC track.
