High School Students Compete In ‘Skills’ Competition

High School students from across Middle Georgia gathered at Central Georgia Technical College today to show off their work.

The SkillsUSA competition gives students the opportunity to take what they have learned in the classroom, and put that into a real life, working situation.

The students compete in areas of architecture, construction, communications, transportation, public safety, and cosmetology.

Today’s regional competition hosted more than 300 students.

SkillsUSA State Director, Gayle Silvey, says allowing the students to get out of the classroom and into the competition gives them an edge for their future career.

“We work with business and industry to actually be able to apply those skills to a real life competition…therefore getting them (students) in touch with business and industry so they can look forward to really great future ahead,” Silvey says.

The 1st and 2nd place students will advance to the state-wide competition in March.
