Henry, Samuels and King Named A-Sun All-Conference Selections
MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – Following a late-season surge to qualify for the Atlantic Sun Championship for the sixth-straight season, seniors Ehjayson Henry and Ryan King and junior Ashani Samuels were recognized by being named to the A-Sun All-Conference teams on Tuesday afternoon.
Henry and Samuels were both named to the All-Conference first team while King was voted onto the All-Conference second team.
This is the second year in a row that Mercer has had two or more players named to the All-Conference first team and third year in a row the Bears have placed at least one player amongst the top-11 student-athletes in the league.
Continuing to prove he is one of the most dangerous attacking players in the league, Henry was voted onto the All-Conference first team for the second-straight season. The Harris Village, Saint Kitts native leads Mercer and ranks tied for second in the A-Sun Conference with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Since arriving in Macon prior to the start of the 2011 season, Henry has racked up 17 goals in his career which ranks tied for the ninth-most in Mercer program history.
Samuels had another solid campaign as the heart of the Mercer defense and was also voted onto the All-Conference first team for the second-straight season. The West Moreland, Jamaica native had three points on a goal and an assist this season and helped anchor a Bears defense that only allowed five goals over their last six regular season games.
For King, the All-Conference second team selection is the third postseason honor of his stellar four-year career with Mercer. The Norcross, Ga. product was named an All-Conference second team selection in 2012 and an A-Sun All-Freshman team performer in 2010. King, who has six points on one goal and four assists this season, finished 2013 with a flurry after taking home A-Sun Conference Player of the Week and A-Sun All-Academic team honors all within te past two days.
Lipscomb’s Omar Djabi and Charles Morrow were named the A-Sun Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, while FGCU’s Isaiah Madrid was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year.
No. 4 Mercer now turns its attention to the first round of the A-Sun Championship where it will take on No. 5 North Florida on November 13. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
