Family Advancement Ministries provides help for Hispanic families
MACON,Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Moving can be hard but moving from a different country and not knowing the language can be even harder. Many Hispanic families have moved from their country to Middle Georgia for the first time, and many of them have felt lost.
Thanks to Family Advancement Ministries in Macon, they don’t have to feel that way anymore.
Family Advancement Ministries offers a variety of services for low income families. Whether it’s financial, educational or even personal, they offer their help.
Assistant Director of the program, Sachie Thorne, has worked closely with the Hispanic program and saw the need in the Hispanic community.
“As we saw the need, the group just kept growing and growing.” Thorne said. “Based on the clients when they come here, we ask them what is it that you need from us and we listen to them. Once we listen to them, we cater to different classes.”
The program offers a wide range of classes including teaching them English, preparing them for their citizenship, Spanish GED, computer classes, and community school for those who didn’t get a standard education. The best part about it is that all of these services are free.
Aside from that, they try to be a home away from home. Liccet Jimenez, from Venezuela, found that home within the group.
“When someone comes from a different country, they really do feel lonely. They want that warmth from friends and family. And in this group you really feel that,” Jimenez said.
The program welcomes any family in need, even if you just need a friend.
Family Advancement Ministries will be hosting a Glow4FAM 5K , Saturday November 12th at 5:00PM. If you want to register, visit www.familyadvancementministries.com. All proceeds will go to the program so that they can continue to provide their services.
