Helms Career Institute announces merger

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Students looking to enroll at the helms career institute may have to wait awhile before they’re accepted.

The institute’s Macon and Milledgeville campuses announced it’s suspending enrollment for new students as both campuses prepare to consolidate to Macon.

The president for Goodwill Industries, who oversees the institute, says the goal of the merger is to streamline accreditation to allow students to have the proper skills they need to get a job.

“Basically have a period time when we won’t have a school of health sciences and a school of spa services. Those two programs will be moved here which is our Helms College campus,” Jim Stiff says.

Students already in the programs will have the opportunity to finish.

Goodwill is looking to raise money to build a school of health sciences at HCI at their 18-acre Eisenhower Parkway location.

Leaders are looking to have the $5 million dollar project finished by 2017
