Heard Elementary hosts parade to celebrate locally grown food

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Heard Elementary students in Bibb County showed their love of healthy food in a unique way on Thursday.

The “Know Your Farmer” parade was the highlight of the school’s “Georgia Grown Week.” It’s an effort to teach kids about the importance of locally grown, healthy food.

Students dressed as different food groups including grains, meats, veggies, and fruits. Then they walked the halls of the school and waved to their fellow classmates.

“When we teach them about food and where it comes and that it comes from locally grown, they understand that it’s healthy, plus it tastes better,” explained Cleta Long, the Bibb Schools Nutrition Director.

The Bibb County School District is one of 14 school systems in the state selected for this special program.
