Hawkinsville Fire Leaves Family Without A Christmas

A fire in Hawkinsville early Thursday morning left the Howard family with nothing this Christmas.

16-year-old, Doug Howard escaped from his family’s burning four bedroom, double-wide mobile home when he heard his younger sister screaming inside. He ran to get a ladder and climbed through a window to save 13-year-old Kimberly Howard.

Two of the four children are being treated at the burn center in Augusta, while students at Hawkinsville High School come together to help. Principal Rosemary Wright says the student body selects a family to help every Christmas. This year, the students have chosen one of their own, the Howard family.

Pulaski County Fire Department’s Chief Leslie Sewell believes the fire may have started in the kitchen, but the investigation is ongoing.
