Group in Macon brings art of mime to Bellevue community
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There’s a new dance studio in Macon teaching young people the art of mime.
The dance is a form of expression that’s giving the youth of Macon a chance to express themselves creatively.
“The biggest thing that I saw in miming is the opportunity for people to be able to express themselves, young people we know as a whole, they go through different self esteem issues and different things on a day to day basis. So this is just an outlet for them to be able to express what they go through,” says Nick Farley, Director of the organization.
The IMIME, Incorporated Empowerment Center officially opened for business Saturday.
“This is a safe haven for kids,” says Jessica Johnson, who has been with the organization for 5 years.
The facility for the non-profit organization is a dream come true for Farley.
“I think it’s just a great thing to see so much love and support from the community,” says Farley.
“We can reach more of the community, because we were going from church to church, but we want to just reach the masses,” says Jessica Farley, Treasurer of the organization.
Dozens of people filled the studio Saturday during its grand opening ceremony. It was an event celebrating the new home featuring the unique style of dance.
For Jaydon Glover this is an opportunity to do something different and fellowship with others.
“The people you get to meet, the places you get to go, and showing everybody how much i love God,” says Glover.
For Chandler Moore, this is about learning technique.
“If your facial expression is not on point, the crowd is going to be loss, they are going to be over here and over there,” says Moore, a student with the team.
Farley says The center is more than just a space for students to show off their dancing skills. They’ll also have access to some tutoring.
“We want to make sure they are also winning in education. So I feel like if they are coming week to week to get dance education, they’re coming week to week to get mime education, then we’ve got to make sure that they are also excelling in school,” says Farley.
The people behind this organization say this is a place where kids can go to stay out of trouble.
“We push our kids to the max, we are going to make sure that they feel good about themselves, also by spreading the word of Jesus, and letting them know that they are not alone. We are here right there with them through anything,” says Anastasia Marshall, Executive Coordinator and mother of 3 boys in the program.
“Everyone is not interested in basketball, football, and other sports, so dance, everyone loves music, everyone loves to dance,” says Johnson.
