Grits Café Destroyed in Blaze
FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A fire ripped through Grits Café in Forsyth Monday night as hundreds looked on from the city square.
The Forsyth Fire Department rushed to the scene around 5 p.m. Firefighters attempted to tackle the blaze, but as flames intensified they were forced out of the building.
The Forsyth Fire Department called in back-up to assist in putting out the fire. Crews from Monroe County EMS, Macon-Bibb County, Lamar County, Butts County and Flovilla all helped contain the fire to the restaurant.
“We were pushed out at one point because of the intense heat, but we were wanting to hold it to that building to keep it from spreading and what we tried to do is once me made our interior attack and we held it in check it started to overwhelm us, we backed out and then we called in more resources,” said David Herndon, Forsyth Fire Chief.
Chief Herndon says they don’t know the cause of the fire, but crews will remain on the scene all night to put out spot fires, and investigate what started the blaze. There were no injuries reported.
