Gresham Motorsports Park Kicks Off 2012 Racing Season
JEFFERSON, GA – After a long off-season, Gresham Motorsports Park re-opened its gates for the 2012 season on Saturday, April 7th with five local divisions and the Beau Slocumb Memorial 208 Presented by US Auto Sales Pro Late Model race. The Northeastern Georgia facility had multiple festivities to usher in the 2012 racing season, including a helicopter Easter egg drop to celebrate the holiday weekend.
The pre-race festivities set the tone for the season but once the green flag flew on the first feature of the evening the action heated up. When the Mini Stock field drove into turn one for the first time the top-three drivers were three-wide looking for the lead. Scotty Beck won that battle, went to the top spot and held it until his motor expired on lap 21. Avery Burgess and Aaron Calvert duked it out during the final few laps with Burgess taking the first checkered flag of the 2012 season.
The 20-lap dual Renegade and Sportsman feature highlighted heated battles for the two race victories. Jackie Daniel and pole-sitter Brian Sosebee were vying for the Sportsman win with Daniel going to Victory Lane. Meanwhile, Mike Childers and Nathaniel Carlisle raced hard for the Renegade checkers with Childers taking it after Carlisle ran out of gas on lap 9.
Cody Haskins started the 2012 season off the way he ended the 2011 season in the Truck division. Spencer Davis won the pole for the 35-lap feature and broke his own track record with a blistering 18. 697-second lap but lost the lead when Haskins jumped the start. The black flag was shown and Davis re-took the lead only to lose it once more a handful of laps later as Haskins drove by and did not look back.
The local divisions capped off their feature action with a wild 35-lap Outlaw Late Models race. Pole-sitter Jason Bates and Matthew Wragg made contact on lap one causing a caution. A few laps later multiple cars got together and Bates was disqualified from the event. Mike Davidson went on to take the first Outlaws victory of 2012.
The on-track action at Gresham Motorsports Park will return on Saturday, May 12th with local divisions and the Racing Radios 100 Super Late Model race.
