Green Upgrades to Macon Mall

New upgrades to the Macon Mall parking lot will not only ease shoppers’ frustrations,but also help reduce the mall’s carbon footprint.

The facelift uses recycled materials, and employees say it’ll help get more shoppers into stores.

Operations Manager Mishay Bingham says traffic congestion is a big issue for the mall. “There’s more traffic that has to stop than there is that follows through in from Eisenhower.”

To fix the problem the mall is creating a new traffic circle. It’ll be made out of the curb, dirt, and rock already on the property.

“We’re just trying to help the earth out and continue to be eco-friendly and go green,” says Bingham. 

The old pavement in the parking lot will also makes soil cement.

Bingham adds, “There’s a machine that’s like a big garden tiller that’s coming up through here digging that up.”

For the mall, using material it already owns is a simple and cheap way to make the changes.

“It is saving us a lot of money,” says Bingham.

New layers of asphalt will be added too. Bingham says,”They are also recycled, and this process is reducing pollution, minimizing waste in the landfill, and trucking.”

During the construction all stores will remain open. The project is expected to be finished in 5 weeks.
