MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Greater Turner Tabernacle AME Church spent Thanksgiving morning giving back to the community through its annual holiday feeding event.

The church opened its doors from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., offering free food, clothing, blankets for the homeless, and toiletries. People could either come inside to dine or use the drive-up pickup option to take meals home.

Reverend David Luke, who has served as pastor for two years, says the event has been part of the church for more than a decade. He says Thanksgiving is an important time to meet people’s needs, but the mission extends far beyond one day.

“It reconnects the church with the community, and also gives reasons that we’re going to be extending ourselves to meet the needs of people during these times,” Luke said.

He added that serving the community is something the church does year-round, not just on Thanksgiving.

“The bible gives us a mandate to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and go check on the widows. We believe this is not just a mandate at thanksgiving but we do it year round,” Luke said.
