Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Holds First Operation I-75 Slow Down For Holiday Travel

Law enforcement agencies were on the road from 2 to 6pm yesterday reminding drivers to be extra cautious this holiday weekend, in the first ever Operation I-75 Slow Down.

“What we’re doing today, we want to go any direction toward zero. Zero deaths. Zero injuries,” says Harris Blackwood, Director, Governor’s Office of Highway Safety.

GOHS kicked off their holiday weekend one day early with officers out on the road encouraging drivers to be on their best behavior.

“The more you can be seen out here, meaning every time a person decides to speed or do something dangerous, if they see a law enforcement officer out here they may slow down without us having to stop them,” says Corporal Sean Alexander, Houston County Sheriff’s Office.

Operation I-75 Slow Down started in Macon at exit 165.· Every three miles, an officer was out on the road checking speed all the way to the state line.

“Officer’s will be working as hard as they as they can to make sure that impaired drivers and drivers that are driving at excessive speeds are taken off this road,” says Blackwood.

You won’t see officials out every three miles on I-75 for the entire weekend, but officers will be out on the roads. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office says the statewide initative, Operation Zero Tolerance, is in full effect for the fourth.

“If you’re driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, you’re going to jail in Houston County. We’ve got to protect the citizens out here,” says Alexander.
