Governor Honors Fallen Bibb Deputy, Other Officers
FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Nearly a hundred years ago, a Bibb County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed while raiding a gambling den in Macon.
Monday, law enforcement agencies from all over Georgia gathered in Forsyth to honor Deputy Franklin Leland Williams and several other officers who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Public Safety Memorial Ceremony is put on every year at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center.
Williams’ grandson was there Monday to accept a medal and proclamation from Governor Nathan Deal. He told us what happened during that raid on a summer night in 1918.
“A man was in the front living room, and shot my grandfather,” says Williams. “And according to the inquest, which I got from the sheriff’s department, my grandfather was able to return fire. The gentleman had run from the scene but he was found a short distance away and had also expired.”
Williams’ name is now inscribed on a memorial wall at the training center.
During the ceremony, a bell tolled 12 times, once for each fallen officer who was honored Monday.
