GOP scrambles to pass Trump’s budget bill ahead of deadline

(CNN)- It’s a critical moment on Capitol Hill as lawmakers face a fast-approaching deadline to pass President Donald Trump’s sweeping budget bill. The President wants to sign the legislation by tomorrow—but that goal hinges on whether House Republicans can rally enough support in time.

Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans are ready to move forward. “We’re going to do right by the American people. This is going to be a great thing for the country,” he said.

The bill includes massive spending cuts and extends trillions of dollars in tax breaks—provisions Republican leaders are touting as major wins. It also allocates billions for immigrant detention and Trump’s border wall. But Democrats argue the bill goes too far. They oppose cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, and point to analyses showing the wealthiest Americans would benefit most from the tax breaks.

“All we need are four Republicans to join us… and stand up in defense of the healthcare of the American people,” said Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

With no Democratic support expected, Republicans can only afford to lose three votes. Overnight procedural delays hint at internal divisions within the GOP. Some holdouts have raised alarms about the bill’s potential to balloon the national debt—and its impact on healthcare.
