GHSA Sets New Ruling on Playoff Seeding Starting in 2026

New formula ranks Georgia’s top 32 teams by strength of schedule, ending region-based playoff selection.
Ghsa Changes Playoff Seeding

ATLANTA, Georgia – (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia High School Association is changing how playoff teams are selected, moving from region-based standings to statewide seeding.

Starting this season, the top 32 teams in each classification will be seeded statewide, regardless of where they finish in region play. The new ranking formula multiplies a team’s winning percentage by that of its opponents and its opponents’ opponents to determine playoff seeding.

GHSA Executive Director Tim Scott said the goal is to ensure the best teams advance deep into the postseason.

“If it’s good enough for those smaller schools, why shouldn’t we do it for every school?” Scott said. “The goal is to make sure you have the best eight in the elite, the best four in the final four, and the best two in the championship.”

The change, which passed with only one vote against, was first tested in 2024 for Class 3A, 2A, Class A Division I and the private-school division before being expanded statewide.

Critics argue the new format could favor teams with weaker schedules, but GHSA leaders say they are open to adjusting the formula if necessary.
