Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville Dedicates Newest Expansion

A celebration was held to dedicate the expansion of The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

The ceremony marks the completion of the second phase of construction. This phase expands the cemetery by about 10 acres, and allows for nearly 3,000 more burial sites for veterans.

The Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Milledgeville sits on 142 acres of land, but only about 40 of those acres are currently being used for burial sites.

World War II veteran Pete Wheeler says, it is always important to remember those who have died fighting for our freedom.

“We are a free nation today, and we will be free as long as we have people like the men and women who are buried here,” Wheeler says.

State Senator Johnny Grant was the keynote speaker for the dedication. He says, it our duty to remember our veterans, by providing a place of honor for their final burial place.

“It shows we respect our veterans, and we appreciate the sacrifices they made,” Grant said.

With this expansion, the cemetery has enough burial capacity for the next 10 years, but another expasion will likely be needed after that. When all 142 acres are developed, Grant says there will be more than 100,000 veterans buried together in Milledgeville.
