MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The 2024 Georgia Milestones Assessment System cites that 62% of third graders in Georgia cannot read proficiently.
Georgia’s Literacy Coach appointed by the Georgia Council on Literacy, Sarah Richards, says November is Family Literacy Month. Richards says that this month is an opportunity for families, parents, children, and grandparents to come together to read.
“This is a great opportunity to in this time to help your children, not only learn how to read, but learn to build hose skills that are going to help them become successful citizens,” says Richards.
Richards says there are 3 ways to improve your child’s literacy skills during Family Literacy Month:
- Create rituals and routines for reading: Daily reading helps your child to build lifelong literacy skills.
- Have a chat: Simply having a conversation can help build your child’s literacy skills.
- Write on: Literacy does not just mean reading but also includes helping your child grow his/her written communication skills
You can create a reading routine by:
- Reading aloud to your child every night before bed.
- Setting aside a device-free time for reading each evening
- Encourage your child to bring a book in his/her backpack every day
You can support your child’s language development now by:
- Asking your child questions
- Singing songs together
- Telling stories
- Visiting new places and discussing things around you
You can help your child grow as a writer by:
- Keeping writing supplies such as pencils and markers accessible
- Buy your child a journal and encourage daily writing about the day
- Tell stories and record them or write them down
