Georgia School Nutrition Association says good food in school equals success for children

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Making sure your child has good food in school is Georgia School Nutrition Associations’ (GSNA) goal.

Laura Lynn is the president of the Georgia School Nutrition Association, also known as GSNA. It’s an organization made up of professionals from across the state who aim to have good school nutrition programs.

She said it’s important for your children to be successful at school, so GSNA members always try to start that success with food.

“You know if children come to school early, they haven’t had breakfast, if they don’t eat breakfast then, they’re sitting in class throughout that morning and their tummies are rumbling,” Lynn said. “And they’re more worried about, ‘when am I gonna get to lunch? what am I gonna get to eat?’, instead of the course work, they should be paying attention to.”

Lynn said the annual luncheon provides GSNA members a chance to learn about the upcoming National School Lunch Week theme and discuss plans for food for the upcoming school year.

“The theme for this coming year, it is School Recipes for Success. We know everyday it takes breakfast and lunch for our kids to be successful in the classroom,” Lynn said.

Bibb County members of GSNA also attended the luncheon.

Executive Director of School Nutrition, Timikel Sharpe, said the theme will benefit students.

“It’s important that we change recipes sometimes, so that they get accustomed to new and different kinds of things,” Sharpe said.

School Nutrition Cite Area Manager Angie Dyer agrees with Sharpe. She said Bibb County Schools will be making some changes.

“We were able to pull out some cookbooks and look at recipes that will help rejuvenate our program and incorporate new ideas. We’re even working on some new recipes ourselves,” Dyer said.

Lynn said about 500 people attended the luncheon. She said that makes her happy to know GSNA is making a difference

“And go home feeling good about what we’re gonna do for the rest of the year.”

So with planning, action, and a love for children, G-S-N-A is confident its members will make a difference in your child’s community.
