Georgia Strawberries Ripe and Ready after Cold Winter

LIZELLA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT – After a long winter and heavy rain slowed down the strawberry crop, the sweet treat is now ready for picking.

Last year, Elliott Farms in Lizella had one of its earliest blooms ever for strawberries. This year’s cool temperatures and cloudy skies delayed the harvest by weeks.

“We’ve had some frost damage,” said farmer Russ Elliott, “we’ve had them covered in plastic bags, but they’re still recovering.”

The produce and the people have been patient and now the strawberries are red, rip and ready for spring. Families from all over flocked to the farm this weekend to pick their own batch of berries.

“Everyone’s been asking, are they ready?” Elliott said, “now they’re ready and doing just fine.”

To pick a fresh batch of berries, head on over to Elliott Farms located at 4761 Holley Road in Lizella.
