MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- State Representative Floyd Griffin (D-Milledgeville) has introduced House Bill 436, a measure aimed at repealing the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, also known as the state’s school voucher program.

The Georgia General Assembly passed the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act last year, allowing families to receive $6,500 per student for education-related expenses outside of the public school system. These funds could be used for private school tuition, tutoring, transportation, and other educational costs.

Rep. Griffin says that the program has failed to meet its intended goals, instead creating more challenges for public schools.

“The voucher program disproportionately affects our state’s rural school districts, where private schools are inaccessible to most families,” said Rep. Griffin. “We see a similar challenge in urban school districts, where transportation and private school tuition costs also make the voucher program unattainable for families.”

If passed, HB 436 would completely repeal the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, effectively ending the school voucher program in Georgia.

Representative Floyd Griffin represents District 149, which includes portions of Baldwin, Bibb, and Jones counties.
