MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Leaders and members of the Georgia NAACP are gathering in Macon this week for the organization’s 84th Annual Georgia State Conference Convention.

The three-day event includes plenary sessions, workshops and programs focused on leadership development, youth and college engagement, legal redress and advocacy, religious affairs, political action, membership and organizing, and women’s leadership.

Georgia NAACP President Gwenette Westbrooks says youth involvement is an important part of preparing the organization for its future.

“The next generation is going to be crucial that we train them now because one day they are going to become leaders, so we want to make sure that they are trained in the proper way so they will be able to lead this organization. We should always have our youth involved and not just in a conversation, but at the table.”

The convention began Thursday with a press conference at the Macon Marriott City Center.

The Walter & Laura Butler Membership Luncheon is scheduled for Friday, October 2, at 11:45 a.m. at the Macon Marriott City Center, located at 240 Coliseum Drive. The event lists Dr. Wanda West as the keynote speaker, with tickets priced at $65 per person.

The convention also includes a Women in NAACP Game Changers Breakfast, additional workshops and other activities centered on advocacy, leadership and community engagement.

A Freedom Fund Awards Gala is scheduled for Saturday, October 3. Convention materials list the Tubman Museum as the location and 7 p.m. as the start time.

The convention brings participants from across Georgia to Macon for discussions on leadership, organizing and community involvement.
