Men and women’s basketball will start in 2013, as will women’s volleyball.

The teams will be paid for with private money and a special student athletic fee approved by the Georgia Board of Regents on Tuesday.

Georgia Gwinnett opened its doors in 2006 and now has an enrollment of 5,500. It is the state’s first four-year public college in more than a century.

The college plans to hire an athletic director and begin building facilities this year with hopes of applying for admission to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
