Georgia grown products sold at Georgia National Fair
PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia National Fair is here until Sunday.
Before you hop on some rides and grab some food, consider stopping by the Georgia Grown Building for a look at several unique products made in the peach state.
From pecans to jams and jellies, to sauces and baked goods, you’re in the right place for some good Georgia grown products. The 20,000 square foot building welcomes people from all over to showcase and educate people on Georgia’s diverse agriculture industry.
Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black says, “There’s a great hunger with consumers to be able to know more about the food, where it comes from and then you can come here and meet the person that produced it.”
Margaret Amos is vendor at the Georgia Grown Building. She travels from Columbus. She and her son make cheese straws by hand. She says the cheese straws are unlike anything you can find in grocery stores. They’re made with love.
“The biggest compliment we can get is when somebody says these taste just like the ones my grandma use to make. That’s when we know we got a good product,” Amos adds.
Goodson Pecans in the south Georgia area sells pecans at the building. Vendor David Goodson says, “We take a lot of our pecans and we manufacture them into making all natural pecan butters. If you think peanut butter or almond butter, but it’s made completely with pecans.”
The Georgia Grown Building is also fun and educational for the kids. Kids learn where their school lunch comes from starting from the farm to the forks.
“I learned where milk comes from and how to milk a cow,” says Brooke who attended the fair with her family.
The main goal of the Georgia Grown building is to connect, educate and support locally grown businesses. The Georgia Grown Building will expand next year. Commissioner Black says a baby barn will be added where fair goers can watch live births of cows and pigs each day at the fair.
Proceeds from sales at The Georgia Grown Building benefits Agricultural Youth Scholarships.
