Georgia economy sees forest industry losses, rail expansion, and new business growth
Mill closures, infrastructure investment, international outreach and a new Monroe County business shape this week's economic outlook

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Georgia is facing a mix of economic challenges and development, from losses in the forest industry to new investments in infrastructure, international outreach, and small business growth.
Forest industry faces significant losses
Georgia’s forest industry is facing major challenges, according to a new report that shows recent mill closures are expected to cost the state $2.9 billion and nearly 7,000 jobs.
At the direction of Gov. Brian Kemp, a special task force has developed budget priorities for lawmakers to consider in response to the closures. Those priorities include a mass timber state office pilot project and expanded marketing efforts for Georgia wood products.
Governor leads international economic mission
Gov. Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp are leading a trip to Belgium and the United Kingdom this week to strengthen economic ties.
The governor said companies from both countries support jobs in manufacturing and technology across Georgia. During the trip, Kemp is meeting with companies at their global headquarters to encourage additional investment in the state.
Rail network project nearing completion
A major railroad network project designed to improve freight movement across Georgia is nearing completion.
Construction on the Blue Ridge Connector is now 95% complete. The project will connect Savannah to the rest of Georgia, particularly the northeastern part of the state.
Georgia Ports’ latest addition to its inland rail network is expected to open later this year. Electrical power service is anticipated by the end of January, allowing the terminal’s seven all-electric cranes to be fully commissioned in February.
The rail link is expected to help companies — from poultry producers to manufacturers of heavy equipment and forest products — move goods to and from international markets more efficiently.
New business opens in Monroe County
Economic growth is also occurring at the local level.
Forsyth Ship & Print Co. has opened in Monroe County. The veteran-owned business offers shipping and printing services through UPS, FedEx and USPS, along with copying services, notary services and passport photos. It’s located at 438 Cabiness Road, Ste B, in Forsyth.
