Georgia colleges offering free applications for high school seniors throughout March

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Throughout the month of March, several Georgia colleges and universities will offer free applications for high school seniors.
Counselor at Northeast High School, Brittney Perry, says she and other high school counselors are thrilled to present this opportunity to their students.
“Our seniors—we always encourage them to take advantage of all the opportunities presented to them,” Perry said. “During Apply to College Month in November and March, we encourage them to apply somewhere, even if they’re undecided—just apply somewhere.”
Perry says this waiver will increase the number of students applying to college.
“I think it will increase even more once students believe that college is academically accessible to them—and not just the financial part, but once they believe in themselves and understand that they, too, can go to college and succeed, it will increase the number of students applying to college,” she said.
Perry says having a waiver like this encourages students to apply outside of their comfort zone.
“Some students only apply to one or two colleges because that’s all they can afford, but now, I think they will recognize and see that they can access and be accepted to more colleges across the board—even ones they have never heard of or considered,” she said.
Wesleyan College Professor of Business, Seth Selkie, says Wesleyan wants to provide every student with the opportunity to succeed.
“I think any time you open up accessibility to students, it increases their opportunities,” Selkie said. “If you have an opportunity, of course, you’re going to explore it, so I think this will encourage students to figure out exactly where their interests is and where they would like to fit in. With the free application process, it allows them to say, ‘Yeah, maybe I won’t fit in there, but I’ll try and see—because it doesn’t hurt if it’s free.'”
