Georgia 811 aims to promote public safety, prevent damage to underground utilities

April is Safe Digging Month, a time to raise awareness about the risks of digging without proper knowledge of underground infrastructure.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cliff Meidl, a former Olympian and current health and safety ambassador for Georgia 811, is urging people to contact 811 before starting any digging project.

Georgia 811 helps prevent accidents by identifying the location of underground utilities. Homeowners and professionals can submit a free 811 request online or by calling 811 three days before digging. Digging without knowing where underground utilities are can cause serious injuries, disrupt services, and lead to costly repairs.

April is Safe Digging Month, a time to raise awareness about the risks of digging without proper knowledge of underground infrastructure. Meidl, who has personal experience with an underground electric line incident, stresses that people should never assume they know where utilities are buried.

In addition to preventing injuries, calling 811 ensures that workers and homeowners avoid damaging critical infrastructure, such as gas lines or communication cables, which can cause dangerous leaks or outages.
