JACKSON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – People from across Georgia and beyond gathered at Dauset Trails Nature Center on Friday, eagerly waiting to see whether General Beauregard Lee, the famed groundhog, would forecast an early spring or predict six more weeks of winter.

As the crowd eagerly waited, the groundhog made a bold and specific prediction that left some in shock.

He did not see his shadow, which means we’ll have an early spring, but he also predicted there would be snow before the early spring sets in. Despite the unexpected twist, the crowd was mostly in favor of the verdict.

People from all over braved the cold temperatures to hear the news, with some even traveling from beyond the state.  One woman, who was disappointed with the prediction, came out on her birthday to hear the news.

“No, I want cold and snow,” Valdosta resident Lisa Green said. “Because I don’t like being hot and sweaty in the summer.”

Spring officially begins on Tuesday, March 19.
