MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With the winter season approaching, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is preparing for the hazards that come with it.

One of the main hazards in Middle Georgia during the winter season is black ice, which can catch people off guard due to its blending in with the pavement. To ensure the safety of drivers, GDOT has employees on call ready to tackle any winter weather.

Gina Snider, the communications specialist with GDOT, has some good advice for drivers.

“Great idea to do an emergency vehicle kit which could include blankets or extra warm clothing,” she said. “And keep your gas tank always full during these times, and then bottled water or some snacks.”

The West Central district has 243 tons of salt ready to be mixed and sprayed on the streets.

Snider also reminds everyone about 511, a hotline that can be dialed for help on the interstate or accessed through 511ga.org.
