GCSU Students Push for Recycling

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Blue recycling bins are popping up all over Georgia College and State University.

In the past year 50 recycling bins have been placed in every building on campus. Students with the Environmental Science Club are in charge of keeping up with the campus’ recycling.

One student says the awareness is growing, but he’d like to see it expand even more. “There could definitely be a greater awareness of it, because not a day passes where I don’t see at least I person putting a can or a bottle into a trash bin,” says Daniel Chamberlin.

Since the program started nearly 16,000 pounds have been diverted from the landfills. Chairman of the sustainability club, Dr. Doug Otter, says keeping the trash out the landfill has the potential to save the school big bucks.

“We spend more than $150,000 a year on waste removal here and so if we can cut back on that that’ll create more positions, more jobs, more opportunities for students…and maybe lower the cost of tuition,” says Otter.

The Environmental Science Club’s goal is to cut the college’s amount of trash in half.
