GCSU Students Drive Electric Cars for ‘Shades of Green Week’

Students at Georgia College and State University got the chance to get behind the wheel of electric cars as they celebrate Shades of Green Week.

General Motors brought its most interactive car to the GCSU Campus.

Araba Dowell, GM Group Manager, says “Young people are more and more interested in green, and we wanted to bring a vehicle that’s captivating their attention.”

Students drove around campus testing out the car. “I knew electric cars were silent, but I didn’t realize just how silent it was,” says Student Lin Rocke.

The Chevy Volt drives for 40 miles before it switches over to a small 8 gallon gas tank.

Rocke says, “I would love to have a car that was good on gas, especially being a poor college student.”

GCSU student, Keith Bryant, says “I would much rather live on an earth in which people are kind to their environment and take care of their environment then really destroying their environment.”

It costs about a $1.50 to charge it overnight.

Dowell says, “Most people don’t deplete an entire tank every day.”

Students who drove the Volt say it has better technology and is more efficient. Plus, it’s bringing awareness to their driving habits.

“I learned to drive from my mom and she is horrible on the brakes…even just driving this car even though I don’t have one could totally change how I drive,” says Rocke.

Students say change is the answer.

GCSU student Emily Scarboro adds, “Anybody and everybody can be green. It just takes small steps in doing so.”
