GCSU Hosts Nationally Acclaimed Dance Company

The nationally acclaimed Liz Lerman Dance Exchange is partnering with community members, Georgia College and State University students and people who just want to move to the music to create a dance on disability. Anyone can participate, disabled or not.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder but for these performers, so is the art of dance.

“Any type of movement can be dance, anything can be art and beautiful it’s just how you view it,” said GCSU student Christina Spilker.

Dance exchange adjunct dancer Stephanie Miracle says, “Letting go of your original vision and letting a new vision emerge so allowing the piece to speak for itself.”

The dance company is from Washington, D.C. and dances with people of all ages and abilities.

“We’re always encouraging them to adapt the material to their own bodies because often that creates really beautiful variations and surprising things that we couldn’t come up with if we were just setting movement on a group,” said Company Member Sarah Levitt.

Ajunct dancer Suzanne Richard says, “Whether you have developmental delay or paralyzed from the neck down – everyone has the ability to dance it’s just about finding those movements that make your body speak to everyone else.”

By taking a movement and making it work for your body, each individual shows off their skill and contributes to making a brand new dance that’s never been done before.

A free workshop performance will be held this Wednesday at 8PM in the Russell Auditorium at GCSU. Anyone is invited to participate.
