GC Women’s Basketball Team Dominates Second Half in Win Over USC Aiken

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College women’s basketball team (13-3, 6-3 PBC) doubled the offensive output of USC Aiken (4-13, 2-7 PBC) in the second half (47-23) on its way to a 72-48 win Wednesday night at the Centennial Center. Juniors Enisha Donley (Loganville, Ga.) and Shanteona Keys (Roswell,Ga) led the way for the Bobcats with 45 points collectively.

“I thought it was a really good second-half effort,” said Bobcats’ head coach Maurice Smith. “It’s been a consistent theme with our team this season. If we can get consistent stops on the defensive end, we can be pretty good. I thought the second half we were really good in that area.”

After netting 22 points in each of the last two games, Donley led Georgia College with 23 points tonight. She shot 67 percent from the floor on 8-of-12, and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.

Keys’ 22 points allowed her to claim the No. 12 spot on the Georgia College all-time scoring list with 1,111. She leap-frogged Alison Barry (1,096) and Chimere Jordan (1,099), and now needs 15 points to enter the top-10, which is currently held by Dalana Watson (99-03) and Ashley Williams (04-08) at 1,126. Keys also sank two threes leaving her two shy of breaking into the top-10 of that category as well.

Senior Thresia Elskamp (Potosi, Wis.) returned to action for the Bobcats and led the team in rebounds with eight and assists at four. Freshman LaRice Walker (Franklin, Ga.) had a career-high seven boards and added 11 points. Senior Brandi McKinney (Cincinnati), senior Abby Slocumb ( Suwanee, Ga.), and Keys registered two steals apiece.

Georgia College never trailed in the game, but found itself tied at the half at 25. The Bobcats stormed out of the gate in the second with an eight-point run. In a 25-second span midway through the second, Keys secured three rebounds before delivering a three-pointer that gave the Bobcats’ its first double-digit lead in the midst of a 12-point run. Less than five minutes later, a Keys layup would double that lead to 20 and the rout was on.

The Pacers were led by Courtney Mealing and Mackenzie Reese with 11 points each.

The Bobcats’ next matchup will be at Young Harris College on Saturday, Jan. 25 for a Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tilt starting at 1:30 p.m.
