Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett running for Georgia Secretary of State focusing on election integrity and voting rights
Dana Barrett, who represents District 3 in Fulton County, brings a diverse background to the race, including experience as a technology executive, entrepreneur and media host. She previously was the Democratic nominee for Georgia’s 11th Congressional District in 2020.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Dana Barrett, a Fulton County commissioner and former congressional candidate, is running for Georgia Secretary of State, centering her campaign on election security and support for small businesses.
In launching her campaign, Barrett has emphasized protecting what she calls “free, fair and secure elections,” a message shaped in part by her role in recent disputes over Fulton County’s elections board.
Barrett has drawn attention for opposing the appointment of certain nominees to the county’s elections board, a move that led to legal challenges and the threat of penalties, including fines and possible jail time. A recent ruling by the Georgia Court of Appeals reversed those penalties, siding with the commissioners.
In a statement following the decision, Barrett called it a victory for voters and election integrity, saying she would continue fighting efforts she believes could undermine confidence in Georgia’s elections.
Her campaign also highlights her experience in the private sector. Barrett began her career in technology, eventually rising to a vice president role before launching her own consulting firm. She later opened a bookstore and coffee shop in Roswell and worked in media as a radio and television host.
Barrett says that combination of experience positions her to oversee both elections and business services, which fall under the Secretary of State’s office.
The race comes as Georgia remains a focal point in national debates over voting laws and election administration, particularly following the 2020 presidential election.
Barrett has been outspoken in her criticism of efforts she says could restrict voting access or interfere with election outcomes, including actions tied to allies of former President Donald Trump.
If elected, Barrett says she plans to focus on strengthening election systems, expanding access to voting and supporting small businesses across the state.
The 2026 election for Georgia Secretary of State is expected to draw multiple candidates and significant statewide attention.
