Fort Valley State University Awarded $2.6 Million

FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today, the U.S. Department of Education announced that Fort Valley State University would receive a grant worth $2,626,143.  It is a five year award, which will be used to boost academics, improve buildings, and strengthen financial management systems.

It’s part of a nationwide award targeting Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  “HBCUs have made enduring, even staggering contributions to American life despite the steep financial challenges many have faced,” U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said in a news release. “The grants will help these important institutions continue to provide their students with the quality education they need to compete in the global economy.”

The Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities grant is administered by the Office of Postsecondary Education.

Nationwide, $228 million in grants were awarded to 97 institutions.  Georgia’s HBCUs will receive a total of $17,835,427.
