FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Fort Valley State University marked the opening of its new Legacy Hall apartment building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday, expanding on-campus housing options for students.

President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Timothy Hatchett says the new Legacy Hall apartments are a 32-bedroom building, bringing more room and accessibility to students while providing more modern living for Wildcats, particularly those in health care-related fields.

“Seeing an institution grow as fast as we’ve grown over the last four years, it’s truly monumental to be here and have this facility open and have the students excited about moving in,” he said. “It’s a great day. Love the space in the building. So, the feeling is overwhelming, because we see the growth of Fort Valley State University.”

He says the apartment-style housing facility is designed to support student growth, especially in health fields, with construction beginning in 2025 and future expansion planned.

“The goal is to expand it over the next few years, if we get the funding and approval to do so,” he said. “Right now, we are still growing, and we love the fact that we are growing. We have students that want to be here, and we want to make sure we provide them the best possible experience, and to do that we know we need student housing.”

Since the launch of the new Bachelor of Science in nursing program at Fort Valley State, Hatchett says enrollment has increased, and the new apartments are expected to fill quickly.

“So, as we began to grow and expand that, I think it’s a great opportunity living here,” he said. “When you see these apartments, you’ll get the chance to see what I see, and I think they’re going to appreciate this space. It beats the traditional dorm, and it’s more residential. So, they can be more independent, and I think they’re going to love that opportunity.”
